SSD L2 Writeback Cache Question

Hi, I am considering building out a raid array based on slower WD Red NAS drives and have a question about using SSD's as a write back cache. Would mirroring a pair of SSDs with on board capacitors and using that mirror as a L2 write back cache be enough of protection to prevent data loss in the eve...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

All of my volumes are flat. Even though I'm doing a PCI passthrough of the raid controller to the VM, Starwind VSAN is still are serving iSCSI luns off of an NTFS volume. When I pass through the raid controller to the SAN VM, the VM thinks it's the actual LSI 9260-4i controller connected to it. The ...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Great :) I didn't get a chance to add this information until now but last night I verified that if I passthrough the RAID adapter to the SAN VM and present LUNS back to the host, everything works great. Prior to that, I tried removing Starwind and installing the Microsoft iSCSI target and I saw file...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

One last piece of information...

The SAN VM C and D drives were both configured at thick-provisioned, lazy zeroed.
The test VM I created was configured as thin-provisioned.

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Sure. I just sent them to your support email address. I have a little more information... not sure if it helps... I tried creating a new SAN VM using Windows Server 2008 R2 to see if it had the same behavior. When I created my test VM on a LUN exposed by the 2008 R2 SAN VM, it didn't corrupt like it...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Additional information: I noticed a few errors in the Event Log of the SAN VM in addition to the Starwind logs. At the time that I received this error in the Starwind log (Srv: Worker: GetQueuedCompletionStatus() failed (error 1117)!) at 15:43, I saw this error in the system event log: (source: pvsc...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

I tried the new build and unfortunately it didn't work out. These are more snippets from the log. I saw the same behavior. 10/29 12:29:26.535 a44 Srv: Worker: GetQueuedCompletionStatus() failed (error 1117)! 10/29 12:29:26.535 a44 IMG: *** ImageFile_IoCompleted: Error (1117) returned to IO completio...

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Probably from the allocation of new blocks since the test VM was a thin provisioned disk. Looking forward to trying this :)

Thank you again.

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Thank you so much. I will try it as soon as I can. Anton mentioned this fix was for a VAAI bug. I wasn't doing any cloning or vMotion'ing of VMs. It was a fresh VM installation. Do you know when this will be made available as an official release? I've sent the link to the pre-release build with PM.

Re: VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Just wanted to provide an update... Since I didn't hear any responses I decided to reinstall the most recent ESXi build on the host I've been experimenting with. I only performed the most basic of configurations on the host, enough to get one management NIC working, followed by the local iscsi traff...

VSAN for VSphere Installation Issues

Hello, First I'd like to say thank you for providing a free high availability option for vSphere users with no size restrictions :) Now onto my questions... I'm following your PDF on configuring my two host ESXi cluster (http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-san-hyper-converged-2-node-clu...

Re: vSphere VSAN Information Request

That's good news. So from a technical perspective... I would create a VM to run Starwind VSAN v8. I would also create a vSwitch and attach a vNic to the Starwind VM. I would also attach the ESXi's iSCSI target to that vSwitch. This would let me attach storage presented by the Starwind VM to it's own...

vSphere VSAN Information Request

Hello, I'm investigating the possibility of consolidating my lab from four servers into two. I currently have two Starwind v6 servers that provide storage to two ESXi nodes. I do not have any highly available storage on the iSCSI targets and I'm only licensed for the free version of your product. If...
