Re: StarWind iSCSI SAN Version 8.0 Beta

Congrats on the new version! If I wasn't leaving for vacation in a few days, I'd test it out immediately. Will check back in a couple of weeks. 03.jpg This needs some more explanations. When should I select these options? What are the performance implications? What does "deletion support"...

were this really SAS disks with problem? Once i had big speed troubles with WD SATA RAID disks on a HP SAS controller. Now i have also SATA disks.
Sorry, can't remember, was some time ago. Can't you connect a single SATA disk, just for testing?

Re: 5.8 beta Feedback

Wow, you worked a lot on the new release!!! I'm impressed. Here's the updated list of my observations for version 5.8.1855_beta (build 20111230), new things first: HA: What does "Restore Current Node" do? Managing an old version results in RTFM error message. Repro: Try to add a target to ...

Re: horrible slow connection to ESX

Have you tried attaching the disks directly, not through the PERC 5/iR? I once set up some Dell servers that had disastrous performance. As soon as I used dirt-cheap SATA disks, connected to the board (the mainboard had connectors too), the problem disappeared. I saw the same problems you describe h...

Re: 5.8 beta Feedback

I know this is no "Feature Request" forum, but I'll post here anyway, to give you a rough idea of what features one person (me) would like. Feel free to ignore me. :) My dream version would have more flexibility of the storage: I'd create a LUN, then, one day, make it HA. A month later I c...

Re: 5.8 beta Feedback

Hi wow, you guys are quick to answer! I agree with everything said, but have a couple of comments Setup asks me if I want to install StarPort. Why would I want to install it? Why not? It is used as a transport for replication to remote target in Mirror devices. I thought the new version uses it's ow...

5.8 beta Feedback

Here's the list of my observations, in no particular order: Why is there a gorilla in a splash screen? And where does the hippo come from? Corporate identity, anyone? Setup asks me if I want to install StarPort. Why would I want to install it? Why not? When trying to create an image in non-existent ...

I'm in no relation with the paper's authors. I just stumbled over it and thought you might be interested, because I found it an interesting read.

Paper about replication, etc.

Hi guys Here's an interesting paper about reliable block storage replication, usable for VMs, if you haven't seen it yet: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.178.9190&rep=rep1&type=pdf The proposed solution supports replication, checksumming, branching, snapshotting and ...

Re: Write confirmation delay

I finally found the root of the problem. After some heavy debugging sessions I discovered that a write to a certain region caused the delay. Further testing revealed that one hard disk was buggy - I replaced it, did some more tests and could no longer reproduce the problem. But I still don't quite g...

Re: cahce expiry period - what number offers the best performanc

Discarding (freeing memory w/o data written to disk) cache is an extremely effective way to render whole volume useless. As a result who-knows-how-many last writes would not reach the medium. So the answer to you question is: NEVER. (When would discarding cached data ever make sense? [Except under ...
