VMWare/Starwind HyperConverged Queue Depth

All, Does SW or any forum member have recommendations regarding whether it's beneficial to change the default queue depth in a Windows 2012 R2 OS running StarWind in a hyperconverged scenario running on VMWARE? I understand that there are max queue depth limits both in VMWare as well as the guest op...

Re: Newbie Question

Hi there, Regarding the requirement of a DC, are you using Hyper-V or VMWARE as your hypervisor. There is definitely no requirement for a DC if you are using the latter. With respect to the 4 1GB NICs, this will all depend on your load, but considering 10GB pricing has come down considerably, I'd op...

Re: Feature Request - Supervision and Monitoring

Starwind, It would also be helpful if you could throttle email notifications. I find that Starwind will bombard me with hundreds of emails whenever a loss of sync occurs and due to the sheer volume, I'll receive emails hours after the actual event occurred. I requested this feature at least a year a...

Feature Request: Log throttling and better content

Hi, I've been a long time Starwind customer and one thing that has been an absolute pain to deal with is the sheer volume of email that gets generated if there are transient HA events. As a real world example, I've seen my Starwind installations have a slight blip (unnoticeable to my monitoring syst...

Build 10547 Performance degradation

Hi there, After upgrading from build 9781 to 10547, we've noticed our Veeam backups have been taking 4-5 times longer to finish. I'm also experiencing loss of HA synchronization during periods of heavy IO. No other changes have been made to the system other than upgrading to the newer build. Has any...

Re: VSAN on vSphere

All, Here are some observations/comments regarding my move from standalone servers running Starwind in HA to a roll-my-own Hyperconverged setup using Supermicro servers, VMWARE, and Starwind. Operating system hosting the Starwind software and the test virtual machine are Windows 2012 R2 (latest patc...

Re: VSAN OVF Questions

Well, since I can't activate the evaluation edition with my VL key, I'll need to follow a different path. Starwind: Do you have any recommended docs/tweaks that need to be made to a fresh installation of Windows 2012 R2 for exclusive use as a VSA? Darklight, I still have your recommendations from an...

Re: Designing a new system. Need some input :)

L2 cache in Starwind is defined on a per-LUN basis. It's my understanding that they're researching the ability to have an L2 cache that all devices can share.. Not a deal breaker for most people, but I don't have a lot of space on my SSDs to carve out for L2 cache for individual devices. I'm waiting...

Re: Designing a new system. Need some input :)

Samsung 840s here.. No problems whatsoever.

I use LSI's Cachecade, so I have no input regarding Starwind's L2 cache.

Best of luck!

VSAN OVF Questions

All,
The VSA that I downloaded from the Starwind customer area uses VM Hardware version 8, as well as E1000E type network adapters. Does Starwind have a recommendation against upgrading the VM hardware version 11, or using VMXNET3 adapters?

Thanks

Re: VSAN on vSphere

HI Darklight,
That DiskMaxIOSize change recommendation was new to me, so thank you for the useful information.

It'll be sometime before I'm in a position to post, but will do so when it happens.

Thanks again,
Elvis

Re: VSAN on vSphere

Hi Darklight, That's great to hear. Are you presenting the physical disks to the VM directly, or just presenting VMDKs to back the storage VSAN is advertising? Have you found it necessary to lock resources to the VSAN vMs for proper performance? I'm glad to hear performance is faster in some cases, ...

VSAN on vSphere

Fellow users, I've been using Starwind for many years now in a separate compute / storage configuration but am interested in community feedback from those who are using VSAN in a hyper-converged setup. I expect to lose a little bit of performance since the VSAN software would in fact be sitting in a...

Re: Latest stable build(s)?

One of my clusters is on the latest, and another is on the previous build - Both are stable for me.

I'm not using LSFS or L2 cache

All my HA luns are in WT instead of WB mode (waiting a few months before switching back to WB as I had noticed major slowdowns in resync when using WB)

Cheers

Darklight,
What version are you running, v6 or v8? WB might have been fixed in the newest build, but I experience mostly read latency vs write latency, so WT works in my scenario.
