Re: Deduplication stats

I don't know about on vmware workstation, but Starwind runs fine as a VM on Hyper-V. I'm running it in a scenario that probably would be better served by the Hyper-V native edition (HA SAN and MS cluster using the SAN on same hardware), but that wasn't an option when I started.

6.1?

Hi,

Is there a Beta for 6.1 coming soon? And will this be the version when HA dedupe targets are possible?

Thanks,

Aitor

Re: Testing Starwind "speeds" with SSD

Performance and tuning really depends on your use case, which you haven't really explained. However, I can guess a bit from your hardware spec... 1) You have only one HBA which has 2 x4 SAS connectors, each channel capable of a max bandwidth of 600MB/sec full duplex. Therefore you have up to 600x4x2...

Re: HA Performance Issues - MPIO Round Robin

Could you name and shame those motherboards? Or more usefully, see if there is some common factor - e.g. manufacturer, chipset. It could be that even if it has proper x8 slots they are going through some kind of hub so the overall system bandwidth is limited. A 10GbE card is going to be pushing a lo...

Re: starwind native installation

After you've connected to the target in MS iSCSI Inititiator, you need to go to Server Manager > Storage > Disk Management, find the iSCSI volume, make it online, initialise it and then create your partition(s), You should only have to do this from one node. Then you need to go to Failover Cluster M...

Re: HA Performance Issues - MPIO Round Robin

The x4 connection in x8 slot event is an interesting one. I have seen this before with my Intel 10GbE NICs (even though my motherboard has only x8 slots) and also with Areca RAID cards where sometimes at boot they would negotiate a x4 connection even though they should have been x8. There are severa...

Re: Why did you buy StarWind and not its competitor?

Why I bought is an interesting question, but why I am glad I bought is even more interesting! Why I bought (this is back in 4.1 / 4.2 days) I needed a SAN to do Hyper-V clustering As of Windows 2008, Windows clustering requires persistent reservation. Starwind was one of the few software SANs that h...

Sync Different

(If Apple had an HA SAN, maybe that would be their slogan) This is all 5.8... I'm having to do a full sync of several HA targets at the moment (my fault - didn't successfully disable Windows Update, so they both rebooted about the same time). All my targets had to be resynced, and all were set to re...

Re: Invalid storage selected!

Sounds to me like expected behaviour: if there's zero bytes free on the physical disk, Starwind should refuse to mount a dedupe disk held on it, as deduped disks can only grow, not shrink. Perhaps there should be an option to mount it read only? It will be interesting to see what happens in V6 with ...

Re: HA Performance Issues - MPIO Round Robin

Do you have one or two switches? If two, are they interlinked? And if they are interlinked, how? Are your two iSCSI subnets on seperate VLANs with seperate LAGs between the switches?

Do you get better performance if you use one of the other MPIO modes like Least Blocks?

Re: Version 6 beta?

Wow! Can you expand a bit? 3 nodes HA - is that just like the current 2 node HA, but with a 3rd node, or is it handled differently (e.g. 2 node HA with async mirror to 3rd node?). replication for deduplication - by replication you mean full 2 node HA for deduped targets? I will save some RAM... Also...

Re: Slowness with HA targets mounted

Hi Oxyi, That does sound weird. Do you get the same situation if the Partner target is mounted by itself? E.g. maybe the problem is with that box or communications with it, or maybe it is just when both primary & partner are connected? Also, you get the same issue if you use Failover MPIO policy...

Re: Using removeable devices for Windows Server backup rotation

I should have added - whichever method you implement, do a test restore. You don't want to find out there's a problem with your backup procedures by finding that when you really need to do a restore, you can't! And any time you change anything in your backup procedure, re run the tests. For me, if y...

Re: Slowness with HA targets mounted

I suggest you try directly connecting the sync channel, bypassing the switch completely, just to see if that makes any difference at all. You can then establish whether the switch is the problem or not. Also, if you are doing a file copy with a CSV, make sure that the CSV is currently "owned&qu...

Re: Move image File

you can stop the starwind service, move the img, then edit the starwind.cfg file to have the new location, restart starwind service. Then you don't have to do anything on the initiator side. Or, if it's the only img on the old drive, and going to be the only img on the new drive, you could stop the ...
