I am in the process of building a new tape backup solution where the physical tape drive is on a different physical server to the backup software, and StarWind Tape Redirector seems the perfect tool to allow me to do this.

Existing solution using 1 server and no virtualisation:
HP ProLiant ML350G5 server with HP LTO4 tape drive, Windows Server 2008 R2, CA ARCserve Backup r12.5.

New solution using 2 servers and no virtualisation:
HP ProLiant ML350G5 server without tape drive, Windows Server 2012 R2, CA ARCserve Backup r16.5 SP1.
Dell PowerEdge 2900 server with HP LTO5 tape drive, Windows Server 2012 R2, StarWind Tape Redirector.

The existing solution works fine.

The new solution works fine up to a point. The first backup job (of server A) was started at 12:06:33 and ran to its completion at 12:42:20 successfully.

The second backup job (of server B) started at 12:46:17 and then at 13:09:01 the CA ARCserve Backup (running on the HP server) job log shows:
E6300 S0273SV-S2012R2 26/04/2015 13:09:01 6 A Windows NT SCSI port error occurred. (Device Number=[2], Serial Number=[])
When I check the Dell server (running the Tape Redirector), it reports that it had shut down unexpectedly!
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0xfffff8008e17d5ab, 0x0000000000000000, 0xffffffffffffffff). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 042615-28437-01.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this would be gratefully received. The Dell server has been running for many months on test, and the only other occasion when it shut down unexpectedly was on 12 October 2014 when there was a power failure.

StarWind is user-land application (in terms of Tape Redirector functionality) so it does nothing to BSOD the machine. As it's mostly network and storage application some "talks" to SCSI driver for tape device result BSDOs in driver. Start with updating your driver to the most recent one. If the issue would continue please reduce I/O buffer size to some reasonable value (quite often drivers are broken and do allow larger requests they can actually handle, see UR below). If that would not help either please put mini dumps ftp (we can provide you with one) and we'll take a look.

When I installed the tape drive last week, I downloaded the latest drivers off HP's website, but I'll recheck to be certain.
I'll give reducing the I/O buffer size a try.

Yes. Next couple of weeks we'll release an updated version of StarWind which will have SPTD filter driver we'll use to talk to tape (similar to what we did with CD/DVD/BD discs before) to completely eliminate any collisions with third-party application co-installed where tape actually is.
