The log file is around 28 mb .. How do you want me to send that so that you can take a look at it ?
ZIP works well with plain text files. You should get at least 90% compression.

I found that the problem also occurs if I reboot the initiator machine. The StarWind target still shows a connection so when the StarPort machine reboots it cannot re-connect because that connection is in use. As a work-around you could allow several sessions to the target. (for example -share:rw -s...

OK, thanks.

Apart from some small problems, StarWind and StarPort really do rock!

Thanks, i'll do some testing to see if there is any performance hit with the built-in firewall.

My connection to the internet is though a NAT/SPI router.
This then uplinks to the Gigabit switch.
All the machines are connected to the switch.

Code: Select all

Not sure stopping the serivce is a good idea. Other shared devices would be lost together with hanging one...
It's OK, I only had the one connection going at that time.

I got round the problem like this:

1) start CMD.EXE

Type NET STOP STARWINDSERVICE

(that gave an error but still stopped)

2) Edit the StarWind.conf file to remove the add device entry.

3) NET START STARWINDSERVICE.

Now It's all back to normal.

Connected but not connected

Hi, me again. You gonna get fed up with me  Ok, I just removed all my software firewalls to aviod any further problems. (I'm behind a hardware NAT/SPI router so i'm OK for now). I shared a HD (non SYSTEM or PAGEFILE) from the server (MARS) and connected from this machine (EARTH). I could read ...

Ok, so ZoneAlram is bad.

I don't want to use to built in firewall because it has a bad effect on Gigabit thoughput.

As you seem in the know about these things, what replacement firewall would you recommend?

I am currently looking at Kerio 4 Free edition.

Well I just don't believe it. Taking off ZoneAlarm seems to have fixed the problem. I still don't fully understand what's going on because I have ZoneAlarm on all my systems and this is the only one that gave trouble. The other 2 systems are Win XP Pro SP1 so maybe there is something there, I dunno....

This could be issues with firewall settings on the MARS machine. AFAIK Win2003 SP1 has its firewall switched ON by default. You need to enable TCP/IP port 3260 for incoming traffic. Also port 3261 should be enabled to control the StarWind service remotely. Already checked all that. The built in fir...

StarWind log from MARS sent via email because it is to big to post here.

It looks to me that the StarWindService is dying and causing connections to fail and the machine to hang.

OK, the service only was installed the the server (MARS). The management interface was installed on this machine (EARTH). I can connect to MARS and see all the drives OK. That's an improvement. From here I added an unused hard drive E: (not SYSTEM or PAGEFILE). That seemed to work OK. Now if I try t...
